Position Overview

Keeping the El Mirage Dry Lakebed free of damage and suitable for safe, high-speed recreation is an ongoing task involving the cooperation of the public and El Mirage staff. The Education Representative role is designed to interface with the public to educate lakebed users on the rules for recreating safely.

These engagements will take place on weekends and holidays, as these are the busiest days at El Mirage. The position is funded for one year, but may be extended dependent on grant funding.

Guests are to be given educational brochures that focus on safety rules for recreating on the lakebed. The Educational Representative should know these materials well, and be prepared to answer guests’ questions as thoroughly as possible.

The number of guests engaged should be logged, along with notable feedback provided by guests.

2. Observing and Documenting

When not welcomed by guests or when the =me is not appropriate for engaging with guests, the Education Representative will observe and document guest behavior on the lakebed. The Educational Representative should make note of prohibited behaviors, like guests doing donuts, burnouts or other destructive activity to the lakebed, as well as noting unsafe actions like camping too far in from the lakebed’s shore, or riding without helmets.

These reports will be returned to the Visitor Center at the end of each weekend.
